The four star Hotel Schloss Leonstain on the Wörthersee has its own stories to tell
The history of the 4 star Hotel Schloss Leonstain, one of the oldest buildings on the Wörthersee numbers many well known figures who also valued and enjoyed the carynthian hospitality and delights of its cuisine.
During the second half of the 12th century Dietrich von Projern founded the “Burg ( Fortress) Leonstain” on a rocky plateau in Pörtschach. His heraldic animal – a lion striding across a mountain peak – gave the fortress its name and the present Hotel Schloss Leonstain its crest.
In 1492 doing duty as the noble family home of the Burg’s owners it housed dukes, monks, and country squires until 1825 where it was partially burned down and then rebuilt.
One of its emminent guests, Johannes Brahms, came to the carynthian fishing village in June 1877 – a bust in the castle courtyard recalls his creative period – “ I got out at Pörtschach in Wörthersee, intending to continue my journey to Vienna the next day. The first day was so enchanting that I decided to stay one more, the next even more so, that I decided to stay on” he wrote and set to work. What that summer holiday-maker composed was so bright and merry that it caused a friend to expound “ that is blue sky, the trickling of springs, sunshine and cool green shade”.
Since 1910 the Hotel Schloss Leonstain has belonged to the Neuscheller family, who have renovated, enlarged, transformed and embellished the estate – always in great taste and they have made it one of the top addresses in Wörthersee. The preserved privacy inside the castle walls has worked its magic since the 1950s on many well known figures, artists, actors, politicians (Ingrid Bergmann, Manfred Wörner, Albano Carrisi, Heiner Lauterbach, Felix Baumgartner and many others).
Today the Hotel Schloss Leonstain cultivates the ease of light living. The stylish yet comfortable and cosy 32 rooms and suites of the 4 star hotel are furnished partly in Biedermeier and partly in Country House style.
An award winning restaurant, a romantic inner castle courtyard and well trained staff ensure the perfect basis for a wedding or an event.
